Rethinking Car Rentals in Sri Lanka: Designing a Hybrid Peer-to-Peer Rental Platform

As a software engineer, I've always been interested in solving real-world problems through technology. For my university research project, I explored a challenge that affects thousands of people across Sri Lanka: the lack of a modern, affordable, and accessible self-drive car rental platform.

This research wasn't simply about building another mobile application. It was about understanding how technology can reshape the way people access transportation while creating new income opportunities for vehicle owners.

The Problem

Although ride-hailing services such as Uber and PickMe have transformed urban transportation in Sri Lanka, self-drive vehicle rentals remain relatively fragmented.

Most rental companies operate independently, making it difficult for users to compare prices, vehicle availability, and locations. Private vehicle owners who are willing to rent out their vehicles also have very limited opportunities to reach customers safely.

As vehicle ownership continues to become more expensive due to import taxes and economic conditions, many people are increasingly looking for flexible alternatives instead of purchasing a vehicle outright.

This gap inspired my research.

My Research Question

The primary question that guided this research was:

How can a hybrid peer-to-peer and agency-based digital platform improve the affordability and accessibility of self-drive car rentals in Sri Lanka?

Instead of focusing only on traditional rental agencies, I investigated whether combining professional rental companies with private vehicle owners into a single marketplace could provide a better experience for everyone involved.

The Proposed Solution

My proposed solution is a hybrid car rental platform available as both a web application and a mobile application.

Unlike existing systems that serve only one business model, the platform combines:

  • Traditional rental agencies
  • Private vehicle owners
  • Individual renters
  • Tourists visiting Sri Lanka

Through a single digital marketplace, users can search, compare, and book vehicles while owners can easily list and manage their cars.

The platform aims to make vehicle rentals:

  • More transparent
  • More competitive
  • More convenient

The research proposes a platform that includes:

  • Secure user registration and authentication
  • Driver's license verification

These features are designed to improve trust while keeping the rental process simple for both renters and vehicle owners.

Why a Hybrid Marketplace?

Many international platforms focus on only one model.

Some work exclusively with rental companies, while others only support peer-to-peer sharing.

My research suggests that combining both approaches offers several advantages:

  • Competitive pricing
  • Increased flexibility
  • Better customer choice
  • Higher utilization of privately owned vehicles

Instead of forcing users into one ecosystem, the platform brings multiple rental sources together in a single experience.

Technology Stack

To build the proposed prototype, I selected technologies that are modern, scalable, and suitable for cross-platform development.

The planned architecture includes:

  • Frontend (Web): React.js with Next.js
  • Backend: Node.js with Express
  • Database: MySQL
  • ORM: Sequelize
  • Payment Gateway: Webx Pay
  • Cloud Hosting: Amazon Web Services (AWS)

This technology stack provides a strong foundation for future scalability while maintaining excellent developer productivity.

Research Methodology

The project follows an Agile Scrum software development methodology.

Rather than building the entire platform at once, development is divided into multiple sprints that focus on:

  • User authentication
  • Vehicle listings
  • Booking system
  • Payment integration
  • Maps and location services
  • Reviews and support
  • Security improvements

This iterative approach allows continuous testing, user feedback, and incremental improvements throughout development.

Testing Strategy

Reliability was a major consideration throughout the research.

Ultimately, the platform has the potential to modernize how vehicle rentals operate across the country.

Final Thoughts

This research represents more than an academic assignment—it's an exploration of how software engineering can solve practical transportation challenges in Sri Lanka.

While the current work focuses on designing and validating a functional prototype, the long-term vision is to develop a production-ready platform capable of serving thousands of users across the country.

I believe that combining peer-to-peer sharing with traditional rental services creates an opportunity to build a more accessible, affordable, and technology-driven vehicle rental ecosystem.

As I continue developing this project, I look forward to refining the platform through user feedback, real-world testing, and continuous innovation.
